250 plus game NBA veteran Donte Greene has been confirmed as a late addition to the Dongguan Leopards for their upcoming tour to New Zealand for the three game ‘Champions Challenge’ against the SKYCITY Breakers.
Basketball fans are already in for a treat with the first competitive series between two professional teams from New Zealand and China, but the addition of the NBA hardened Greene adds a huge level of interest to the series.
The games are played in New Plymouth (Sep 29), Hamilton (Oct 1) and Auckland’s Vector Arena (Oct 3), with tickets for the Vector Arena game starting as low as $10 a child and $15 an adult to get a taste of Breakers basketball and also the rare chance to see Brian Goorjian’s Leopards side with Greene leading the way.
Greene is a power forward who stands at 6’11” and will provide an NBA level inside threat against the SKYCITY Breakers as they prepare for their upcoming ANBL season. Selected in the 2008 NBA draft, Greene was traded to the Sacramento Kings, where he played a key role in their roster, notching 253 games in a Kings singlet, contributing 2.1 rebounds and 6.1 points per game.
Greene has most recently spent two months at the Boston Celtics but has been released to sign for Goorjian’s Leopards for their upcoming CBL competition and will be on the plane to New Zealand next week.
The Leopards arrive into New Zealand on Thursday 26th September, with a number of civic and public functions in the days preceding game one of the Champions Challenge in New Plymouth, before also playing in Hamilton and then at Vector Arena on October 3rd.
