Tom Abercrombie departed Auckland airport on Monday afternoon bound for Lyon, France. He is joining ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne until the end of the French season. The French club is currently 14-11, sitting 5th on the Pro A League ladder, two wins behind the league leaders Le Mans. The top 8 teams progress to the play-offs.
Lyon’s regular season concludes early in May. Should they fail to make the post-season play-offs Abercrombie could be back to play the second half of the NBL season for the Waikato Pistons.
However Lyon, 17 times French National Champions and boasting NBA star Tony Parker as a former player, and now part owner, are expected to go deep into the play-offs, a scenario that would exclude Abercrombie from the Pistons 2014 campaign.
Abercrombie’s arrival in Lyon will coincide with the departure of his former Breakers teammate Will Hudson. Hudson, who celebrated his 25th birthday at the weekend has played 10 games for Lyon-Villeurbanne, on a short-term contract providing injury cover.
