The annual Rookie Camp at the SKYCITY Breakers Atlas Place headquarters is the opportunity for New Zealand’s finest up-and-coming talent to trial out for a Development spot on the SKYCITY Breakers roster. It is a hugely important part of the player pathway at the SKYCITY Breakers.
Interest in the camp is at an all-time high, due to the value that is increasingly placed in securing a development contract with the club. The players putting their hands up for contracts has increased year upon year according to Michael Fitchett, SKYCITY Breakers High Performance Manager.
“The quality of the Rookie Camp has been taken note of via word of mouth in the basketball community.Players are starting to recognize how big a shot this is, we had 50 or 60 applicants and invited 30 with a huge percentage of eligible players from the Bartercard NBL. Duane Bailey is a great example of what this can mean, he is the latest in a long line of players who have been elevated to fulltime contracts on the back of being development players.”
SKYCITY Breakers Head Coach Dean Vickerman is on site the whole weekend during the camp, watching every scrimmage and every play to identify Development players that will cover all positions across the team.
