Tom Abercrombie is headed to Europe this off-season, taking up a short-term contract to play in Turkey during the SKYCITY Breakers off-season, but fans are reassured despite misleading reports in some media, Abercrombie remains committed to the Breakers and will most certainly be back for the 2017/18 season.
European sojourns have become a regular fixture for Abercrombie and his family and he will this year play for Demir Insaat Buyukcekmece in the Turkish first division. Last year Abercrombie played for Pinar Karsiyaka before playing for the Tall Blacks in their Olympic qualifiers.
SKYCITY Breakers General Manager Dillon Boucher says Abercrombie has gone with the club’s blessing.
“Part of the appeal for Tom committing himself long term to the Breakers is the chance to pick up these sorts of opportunities in Europe during our off-season. His spells in Europe have added to his own basketball knowledge and he comes back to us a better and more experienced player and leader.”
The season in Turkey ends in plenty of time for Abercrombie to rest and consider his national team options as the Tall Blacks ponder their first Asian Championships in August, before he would then settle back at home for the Breakers pre-season and commencement of the NBL in October.
