The SKYCITY Breakers welcomed two significant pieces of news today, with the four-time championship winning club unveiling their first overseas import – and in a rare move for the ANBL, he is not strictly American – while at the same press conference, naming rights partner SKYCITY confirmed an extended deal with the club.
SKYCITY Breakers General Manager Dillon Boucher was thrilled with both items of business announced today, with Dominican Republic international Edgar Sosa announced as the club’s first import for the new campaign.
Boucher is of course a decorated player with the club, but is now fully entrenched in the front office, and without a trace of irony was leaning towards the commercial news as his ‘lead story’ for the club.
“Introducing a new import is always exciting for the club, our stakeholders and for the wider Breaker Nation family. Edgar is going to be a fine addition to our roster, someone that fans are going to enjoy watching tremendously.
“We are also very excited to have SKYCITY back on board as our principle sponsor again this season as we strive for continued success. The partnership is very strong and we look forward to more exciting developments this season. Like us, SKYCITY is focused on entertainment and we look forward to working together to entertain our loyal family of sponsors, corporates, members and Breaker Nation fanbase.
“Basketball is on a well-publicised growth curve at all levels of the game, and the SKYCITY Breakers will continue to play our part in promoting the game to all levels of the community.”
Jonathan Spittle, General Manager Marketing at SKYCITY Auckland, says SKYCITY is thrilled to extend its support of the SKYCITY Breakers for a seventh year.
“The SKYCITY Breakers continue to be a big part of the SKYCITY family, with both our customers and staff enjoying the team’s exciting performances on the court, as well as the positive interactions with the players off the court at SKYCITY. We are really looking forward to the new campaign, and with the talent from last year, combined with some fresh new faces in the team like Edgar Sosa with experience winning championships around the world, I can see this shaping up to be yet another exciting season ahead.”
Head Coach Paul Henare was the one to address Sosa’s addition to the playing roster, saying he is thrilled to welcome the club’s first import into the roster for the 2017/18 season.
“Edgar is an exciting addition to the roster and is just the point guard to ignite this team and the many offensive weapons that he will have at his disposal. He brings a level of experience and calmness that is required to compete in the Australian NBL, and has variety in his game to react to whatever the situation demands.
“As always for us as a club, Edgar will be a good fit given our values and the role we play in the community. I enjoyed catching up with him while I was over in the States and am delighted to have his signature for the upcoming season. But on the floor, he is a winner and knows how to bring the best out of his team mates.”
Sosa has three consecutive league championships to his name in Italy, Iran and most recently in Lebanon. His numbers during his most recent stint in the fiercely competitive Italian top league with Juvecaserta Basket were hugely impressive, averaging 19.4 points, 2.8 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game in the 2017 competition, with his points and assists tallies ranking him second in the league for those categories.
A well-travelled professional basketballer, Sosa spoke from his home in Florida ahead of joining the SKYCITY Breakers for the new season.
“I am excited to join the SKYCITY Breakers, the game of basketball has taken me to so many places and I am just excited to be heading to my new home. I am a hard-nosed player that will give you everything I have in the game. I try to win, I pride myself on winning and will do all I can to be a winner again.”
Sosa is confident that he brings a variety of weapons to the league, with options to suit whatever the game situation is throwing at him and his team mates.
“I am an all-purpose guard, I can score the ball, I can make my team mates better. I just like to read the game and go with what I need to do, sometimes it calls to be aggressive and score points and other times you have to get your team mates involved, so I feel I can adjust to any style of game. I can play the two, but most coaches have played me at the one and I have been playing it all my life.”
Sosa has heard of how competitive the ANBL is, and wants to be rated amongst the best players in the league.
“I have heard the league is tough, its physical and there is a lot more talent coming down to the league. I am excited, I want to prove myself and be one of the better players in the league, do my job and be a great team mate.”
Sosa will join his new team mates in late August, in time for a start to pre-season training on August 28th. The club’s pre-season schedule will be confirmed in the coming weeks, as will the final two players to the fulltime roster.
