    Rob Loe

    Power Forward/Centre

English born, but Kiwi raised Rob Loe (24-year-old) attended Westlake Boys High School where he was named twice as the ASB College Sport Basketballer of the Year. Loe’s early success and recognition was just a sign of things to come.

Loe is no stranger to the club having spent time in the Breakers Academy and Development before heading over to the United States on scholarship to St Louis. Loe starred for three years before graduating and eventually moving to play professionally in Greece and then last season in Belgium. Also, since the age of 18 Loe has been a fixture in the national Tall Black team.

The power forward/ centre stands at 211cm tall ( 6’11”) but is equally as comfortable shooting the three  which offers Henare options in the four and five spots with the potential for the Breakers to go ‘big’ with Loe able to partner 7 foot centre Alex Pledger on the floor.

    Finn Delany

    Small Foward

Despite being just 20 years of age Finn Delany has already played 47 games over three seasons for the Nelson Giants in the New Zealand NBL. Prior to returning home to play with his Giants team, Delany played the 2014-15 season at SW Baptist University in America. An eager student and a great athlete, Delany joins the SKYCITY Breakers full-time player roster following his season last year as a Development player. Look for Head Coach Henare to further upskill the long limbed Delany into a versatile player who can switch between the 3 and 4 spot, with defending a variety of opponents already a string in the bow of this promising young player.

    Shea Ili

Shea joins the SKYCITY Breakers full-time roster for the 2016/17 season having previously played two seasons as a Development player. During that time Ili showed his readiness for a fulltime contract, as he was called upon to play key minutes during the Breakers post-season run, earning the faith of then Head Coach Dean Vickerman on the back of outstanding practice form and attitude.

An outstanding defender and a developing leader, 23 year old Ili was a key figure alongside former Breakers Tai Wesley and Duane Bailey for the Southland Sharks, as they lifted the 2015 New Zealand NBL championship. He averaged 9.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists for the Sharks in that campaign. Ili has more recently moved to the Wellington Saints to continue playing under former Breaker’s point guard Kevin Braswell. In July 2015 he made his international debut for the New Zealand Tall Blacks while on tour in the build up to the Oceania Series.

    Kirk Penney

    Shooting Guard

Kirk Penney is a favourite son of the North Shore and one of the country’s all-time great players, one of just three to appear in the NBA during his storied career that has taken him to the highs of the NBL (winning the Championship with the Breakers in 2011), the top leagues of Europe and of course those looks at the NBA. Penney’s name adorns the club honours board many times from his first stint from 2007 to 2011 and he has lost none of his scoring touch, finishing second in league scoring when playing for Illawarra in 2015/16. Highlights in a long career include playing on the famous 2002 Tall Blacks team that finished 4th at the World Championships and finishing as the tournament’s second highest scorer at the 2010 FIBA World Championships (24.7 ppg). The shooting guard now looks to repeat past success as he returns home to the SKYCITY Breakers on a three year deal.

    Tom Abercrombie

Now in his ninth season with the club, 28 year old Abercrombie has progressed from Development player to one of the premier players in the NBL. One of three team members to have played in all four Championship winning teams for the SKYCITY Breakers, he was named MVP of the 2011 Finals Series. Abercrombie led the Breakers scoring (19 points) in game two of the 2015 Grand Final victory against Cairns Taipans. A product of the North Shore, Abercrombie is one of the most athletic players in the league and can dominate in the paint in getting to the rim, his elevated jump shot is ‘undefendable’ while he can also light it up from deep, consistently putting up some of the most accurate long range shooting in the league. Abercrombie’s numbers are a reflection of a long and successful career, even for a player who is only just reaching his prime. He is just a basketball focused player though, he is studying towards a Bachelor of Science at Massey University when not playing hoops here or in Europe during the off-season.

    Mika Vukona

    Power Forward

Vukona is the heart and soul of the Breakers, often captaining the team but always leading them. Revered throughout the league and indeed international basketball for his strength, fighting qualities and ability to consistently out muscle and out jump much bigger opponents on the boards. Vukona holds the record for the most appearances (297) and the most consecutive appearances (161) for the club. He at one point did not miss a game for five seasons. He is the winningest Breaker of all time with 170 victories to his credit and is also the club’s all-time leading rebounder (2028). Vukona is an out and out winner though, he has five NBL titles to his name, having a championship win with South Dragons in 2009 to go with his four for the SKYCITY Breakers. Mika is also the current captain of the New Zealand Tall Blacks. Vukona will be aiming up for a big 2016/17 campaign after injury affected his ability to play at 100% fitness in the last campaign, but never once did it stop him giving 100% effort as he led his team to another Grand Final appearance.

    Alex Pledger

In his eighth season with the club, Pledger or the man known as ‘Chief’ or simply ‘Pledge’, has played in all four SKYCITY Breakers championship winning teams. He was the NBL’s leading shot blocker in 2012/13 (46 at 1.5bpg) and rebounder (227 at 7.3rpg).  He also had his most productive scoring season, notching 331 points at 10.7ppg. In the 2014/15 campaign Alex picked up a severe foot injury which severely limited his effectiveness but he still managed to play in all but two of the club’s 32 games in a memorable display of bravery and commitment to the team and club, putting off surgery until the post-season. That is now a distant memory, with the Chief featuring strongly throughout the 2015/16 season to again rank as one of the league’s best big men. Pledger was the first new signing of Head Coach Paul Henare who spoke of his importance to the roster, someone that the team can be built around.
